You win.<BR/><BR/>Let's consider the specific issue at hand in the debate between the Anglicans and the Puritans: church polity.<BR/><BR/>We tend to think of church polity as a relatively minor issue when compared with say Pelagianism or Arianism. But the Puritans would have cautioned us to root out false dichotomy. Of course they distinguished between errors of polity and errors concerning anthropology and Christology. But their point was that <I>whatever</I> Christ has taught is authoritative. "The New Testament offers no safety to those who knowingly neglect the least of Christ’s commandments."<BR/><BR/>Another concrete application of the principle is found in the area of pastoral counseling. I've mentioned before that all counseling is evangelistic because the counselor never knows on what point the counselee will refuse to follow Christ. At any point the counselee may evidence that he is really in charge of his life and that the commands of Christ will only be obeyed when the counselee judges that they are compatible with his personal autonomy.<BR/><BR/>That's all I have time for now.
